Wear Your Waste
The ocean contains over 5 trillion microplastics which is incredibly damaging to sea life. If we don’t reuse plastic, this will only get worse. Plastic can’t disappear, it will only get smaller. “Wear Your Waste” is a project I designed to create awareness among the people and their use of plastic. You are what you wear, so if you wear your own waste, that is what you are. The production of the swimwear has been done by only using plastic bags (that would have been thrown away) as material. By hand I cut the plastic bag into a big string, like yarn. I used this to freestyle hand crochet that into wearable swimwear. By doing a typical fashion photoshoot, the material stands out more so it creates more awareness to the material.
On the 2nd of June (2023), Wear Your Waste was exhibited in a 1 day pop-up exhibition "Hydro Playground, Critical Perspectives on Water" at Rozet in Arnhem. Here I was being asked to be a part of “Buiten de Lijntjes” exhibition for Juni Mode Maand FDFA.
